Apple Crisp

Apple Crisp with Walnut Crumble

Y’all know I love apple pie, but I might love this Apple Crisp with Walnut Crumble even more. While a good homemade pie crust is delicious, this sweet buttery topping with toasted walnuts and old-fashioned oats is divine.

This Apple Crisp with Walnut Crumble is easier to make than pie, too. (No crust required!) The simple crumble topping is made with your fingers, which for me is like a meditation. With all our modern conveniences, we forget how good it is to feel the texture of life, don’t we? Take a few minutes to enjoy the feeling of cool, silky flour against your hands, then sticky brown sugar and squishy butter. Hard, chunky walnuts. Rugged oats. Let the texture of your ingredients soak in for a minute.

Then sprinkle that delicious mixture over your lovely dish of apples, pop it in the oven, and savor the flavors of fall. For a gluten-free version, simply sub in your favorite GF flour blend, cup for cup.

Apple Crisp with Walnut Crumble

Ingredients

For Filling:

5-6 cups thinly sliced apples

1 Tablespoon lemon juice

1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed

½ teaspoon cinnamon

For the Topping:

¾ cup all-purpose flour

¾ cup chopped walnuts

½ cup light brown sugar, packed

½ cup old-fashioned oats

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature

For Serving:

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon. Pour apples into 9-inch pie dish and set aside.
  3. Using the same bowl from the first step, stir together flour, walnuts, sugar, oats and salt. Mix in butter with your fingertips until mixture resembles wet sand with some bigger chunks of walnuts and butter. Sprinkle topping over apples in pie dish.
  4. Bake for 1 hour, or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender. Cool for 15 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
